What is the optimal keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of occurrences of a given word relative to the total word count in a text. The formula is: (occurrences / total words) × 100.

The optimal density is considered 1–3%. Below 0.5% — the keyword appears too rarely and Google may not associate it with the page topic. Above 3.5% — you risk keyword stuffing, which Google penalizes with lower rankings.

Important: keyword density is just one of hundreds of ranking factors. Don't optimize for it alone. Focus on natural, useful text that includes semantically related words and synonyms (LSI keywords). Google understands context, not just literal keyword occurrences.

For long texts (1500+ words), a density of 1% is perfectly sufficient. Use the keyword in H1, in the first 100 words and in meta tags — these positions carry more weight.
